Hair loss, or alopecia, can be caused by various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors. Different types of hair loss require different approaches to diagnosis and treatment. Here are some common causes and potential approaches for addressing hair loss:

Androgenetic Alopecia (Genetic Hair Loss):

  • This is the most common cause of hair loss and is often hereditary. In men, it's commonly known as male pattern baldness, while in women, it's called female pattern baldness.

  • Treatments may include over-the-counter or prescription medications such as minoxidil and finasteride which we can supply in our clinic.

Hormonal Changes:

  • Hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid disorders can contribute to hair loss.

  • Treatment involves addressing the underlying hormonal imbalance and may include medications some of which we can supply in our clinic or lifestyle changes.

Medical Conditions:

  • Certain medical conditions such as alopecia areata, lupus, diabetes, and iron deficiency anemia can lead to hair loss.

  • Treatment depends on the specific medical condition and may involve addressing the underlying health issue. Some of these underlying health issue can be addressed by our Pharmacist Independent Prescribers.

Nutritional Deficiencies:

  • Lack of essential nutrients, such as iron, zinc, and vitamins, can contribute to hair loss.

  • Adjusting the diet or taking supplements under medical supervision can help address nutritional deficiencies. Our Pharmacist Independent Prescribers are well qualified to prescribe for you in this situation.

Stress and Telogen Effluvium:

  • Severe physical or emotional stress can lead to a temporary condition called telogen effluvium, where hair follicles enter a resting phase.

  • Managing stress and addressing the underlying cause can promote hair regrowth. We make referral to Mental Health Support Clinics.

Traction Alopecia:

  • Caused by tight hairstyles that pull on the hair, leading to gradual hair loss.

  • Avoiding tight hairstyles and giving the hair time to recover can help prevent further damage.

Medications:

  • Some medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, certain blood thinners, and certain antidepressants, can cause hair loss.

  • In some cases, adjusting medications or finding alternative treatments may be considered. Our Pharmacist Independent Prescribers can help to review your medication and advise your GP appropriately.

We normally refer our patients back to GPs and Dermatologists in difficult chronic cases. Keep in mind that treatment effectiveness can vary depending on the cause and individual factors.
